Marijuana in Military

The use of marijuana is fully legal in 11 states of America. More states are on the path towards permitting the use of this drug for medical and recreational purposes. Despite the increasing marketability of marijuana, there is one place where its use is totally off-limits: the military. Active serving members of the military are strictly prohibited from using marijuana under any circumstances.

Marijuana and Current Military Policy

Marijuana has received wild approval at the federal and public level in America. The tides are in favor of the use of marijuana in all sectors owing to the diverse and amazing benefits that accompany its use. Regardless of this, the military forbids its active serving troops from consuming marijuana in any form. Even the veterans struggle to gain access to medical marijuana due to strict military policies.

Should Military Consider Allowing the Use of Marijuana?

The use of marijuana is at its peak. Due to increased demand and usage of marijuana, it is high time for the military to reconsider its current policies. Allowing marijuana can prove to be very beneficial. Many people avoid joining the military due to their strict policies. Giving up the use of marijuana is something majority disapproves. If military officials permit the use of marijuana, there will be a drastic increase in recruitment numbers. Moreover, active-duty soldiers will be able to better cope with physical and mental illnesses. Medical marijuana works wonders when it comes to treating soldiers with injuries and stress.

Why is the Military Reluctant to Make a Decision?

The military has remained committed in its disapproval of the use of marijuana. Even in states where cannabis has a legal status, military units do not support its use. This firm stance is linked with the negatives of the drug. It is seen that an overdose can lead to idleness and poor decision-making skills. Such behaviors adversely affect the efficiency and discipline of the military.

A Bill in Pipeline

Not surprisingly, many members of the military are getting vocal regarding the change of policies surrounding the use of marijuana. This has drawn attention of several senior military officials. Currently, a bill is in the pipeline which will effectively permit the use of marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. If this bill is enacted, marijuana will no longer be unlawful for active soldiers. They will be free to use, possess and transport marijuana in military-controlled areas as well. On the contrary, if this bill does not get an approval, there are chances that the military will face a huge setback.

In an era of rapid acceptance of marijuana and marijuana-infused products, the military should consider changing its zero-tolerance policy towards marijuana. Permitting marijuana will lead to the growth and evolution of the army. Moreover, there will be a positive effect on the overall economic stability and prosperity of states where legalization of cannabis overlaps with military presence.
